In the south of France, a new art space has opened its doors. The well known Château La Coste in Provence has unveiled a new pavilion designed by the late Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer (1907-2012).

The project was developed between 2010 and 2013 and is Niemeyer’s "ultimate gift to France," according to the Château’s press officer. Built in the heart of a Vermentino vineyard, The Oscar Niemeyer Pavilion is a curvaceous structure that hugs the relief of the Provençal hillside where it is located. The façade is reflected in the water point in front of the structure, creating a poetic and soothing play of light and reflections, a nod to Niemeyer's signature style of organic and sensual.

The pavilion is accessible via a walkway that leads to the large glass facade, behind which is a 380 square meter exhibition space. Next to the building, a 140-square-meter auditorium with seating for 80 people was constructed and like many of Oscar Niemeyer’s structures, such as the National Congress of Brazil and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Niterói, the auditorium is circular in shape.

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1907, Oscar Niemeyer Soares Filho was one of Latin America's first representatives of modern architecture and is best known for designing and building the Presidential Palace, the Brasil Palace Hotel, the Ministry of Justice, the presidential chapel, and the cathedral in Brasilia.

Niemeyer’s love story with France began while in exile in Paris during Brazil's military dictatorship where he stayed on Boulevard Raspail. The Château La Coste pavilion is the final of his many architectural projects in France and the idea of constructing a project in the heart of Provence's vineyards meant much to him: "for him, wine is a strong symbol of man's presence on earth," according to the Château's press officer.

Château La Coste is an estate that combines wine, art, and architecture. This organic vineyard, which opened in 2011 and features a permanent exhibition of 40 works of contemporary art as well as five galleries. In addition to Oscar Niemeyer, many other artists have created works for the Château in order to enhance the estate.
