the Face of luck

EAST COLLECTION

by JAN KATH

With his East collection, Jan Kath is venturing further East than ever before, adding an additional aspect to his offering. China has a rich history in textiles which extends to rug making and it is this history that Jan Kath is paying homage to, through respectfully integrating the ancient Chinese patterns and dragons into 21st century rug designs. In China luck has a face; the dragon. Revered for millennia in the Middle Kingdom, it is considered the ancestor of humanity and the ruler of the water; it determines the seasons, the weather, and therefore the harvest. Still today, children born in the year of the dragon are considered to be especially lucky. So it's little wonder that this legendary creature is a regular component in art and a traditional image on distinguished carpets.
